The Apostles' Creed

The Apostles' Creed is a series of "I believe" statements that systematically outline the core of the Christian faith (find the creed below). It was formulated early in the life of the church and survives to this day as a summary of fundamental Christian doctrines. In the introduction to his new book, a commentary on the creed, Albert Mohler writes: "All Christians believe more than is contained in The Apostles' Creed, but none can believe less" (Intro. xvi).

I really enjoyed reading through this book. I would have enjoyed if he had gone into a little more depth on some subjects, but respect the decision to keep the book as an introduction rather than going deeper into the many complexities of Christian doctrine. One of the places that left me wanting more was Chapter 7 "He descended into Hell." This was by far the shortest chapter in the book. However, it is understandable considering the lack of biblical evidence to support this line in the creed. I would have liked to have read a little deeper into this somewhat controversial subject, but respect Dr. Mohler's decision "not to go beyond what the Bible reveals" (89). Likewise I was pleased with his conclusion of this chapter: "Even as Christ truly died and was buried in the grave, and even as his spirit entered the realm of the dead (hades), Christ was not abandoned nor did his body suffer corruption. Why? Because God raised him from the dead." (91).

I believe this book can be enjoyed by anyone. Dr. Mohler helpfully breaks everything down so that the creed can be understood by anyone. The doctrines discussed in the book are first-order, non-negotiables of the Christian faith that even a child can grasp. Dr. Mohler's work may sometimes seem scholarly on a level that makes his it feel over the head of your average church member. However, I believe this book is written so that anyone can understand it. It would be appropriate for children, young believers, any non-believer interested in learning the basics of Christianity, or older Christians who want to be freshly encouraged by the truths of the gospel.

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; whence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
