He Who is Mighty

Thanksgiving is over, and it's finally December. Christmas music is culturally permissible at last! Personally, I'm not a huge fan of much Christmas music. In many cases I find it cheesy, boring, or childish. However, for the month of December, I can tolerate it. My wife would say this makes me like mean old Mr. Grinch. Truthfully, "[my] soul is an appalling dump heap overflowing with the most disgraceful assortment of deplorable rubbish imaginable mangled up in tangled-up knots." My intention is not to review the Grinch today, but check out that awesome summation of the doctrine of total depravity right there in the original 1966 recording by Thurl Ravenscroft!

Rather, I want to focus on a great song that can be sung around Christmas, but also any other time of the year. "He Who is Mighty" by Sovereign Grace Music draws from multiple scriptures to provide lyrics that glorify God. One of the main texts is Isaiah 9:2-7. "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone...For to us a child is born, to us a son is given..." It also draws on the Magnificat found in Luke 1: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation."

Like I said, this song can be sung any time of the year (maybe that's why I like it more than other Christmas music). However, in light of the scripture passages it draws from, it is especially appropriate around the time of year when we celebrate the incarnation. I love this song so much and can't recommend it enough!
